A First Course in Differential Equations: With Modeling Applications
Dennis G. Zill
Publisher: Brooks Cole
Publication Date: 2008

Course Description
The course covers ordinary differential equations with emphasis on linear equations. Many standard methods are examined including Laplace Transforms, and power series and numerical solutions. Applications are considered.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course the student should be able to:
  1. Recognize a differential equation and distinguish between various forms.
  2. Understand the physical and/or theoretical origin of a differential equation.
  3. Recognize a differential equation, classify it, determine if a solution exists, match it to the appropriate model, and solve it.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge (by proof or application) of the major theorems of elementary differential equations.
  5. Analyze information from applied situations and synthesize it into an equation, and, if possible, solve the equation and interpret the results.
  6. Generate an approximate solution to a differential equation using numerical methods, understand the limitations of such a solution, and understand the difference between such a solution and a closed form solution.
Student Learning Outcomes
  1. Recognize, classify, and solve a first-order differential equation.
  2. Analyze, model, solve, and interpret an applied problem with a differential equation.
  3. Generate an approximate solution (either using power series or numerical methods) to a differential equation.
